Page 126: Are we really only products of our environments? This was our original blog post. Revise/rewrite that post now that you have finished the book. " Do you think that we're products of our environments? I think so, or maybe products of our expectations. Others' expectations of us or our expectations. I mean others' expectations that you take on as your own. I realize how difficult it is to separate the two. The expectations that others place on us help us form our expectations of ourselves.”  Wes Moore  I agree whole heartedly with Wes when it comes to expectations. The expectations others place on us, really do help us form expectations of ourselves. The sociologist Charles Horton Cooley coined the concept of the ‘looking-glass self” which he explained as individuals developing their concept of self by observing how they are perceived by others. this concept suggests that social settings help build your self-image and expectations. Judgement we recei...

The other Wes Moore needed to tell his mother that he got Alicia pregnant. Have you ever had to give someone news that you knew would break their heart? How did you build up the courage?

The other Wes Moore needed to tell his mother that he got Alicia pregnant. Have you ever had to give someone news that you knew would break their heart? How did you build up the courage? I remember the day my great-aunt passed away. She had been fighting cancer for over a year and was home for hospice care. I was her caretaker and spent every day with her until my cousin came home to continue care. Being with her every day, we became very close. My cousin her daughter and I became much closer as well. The day my dear aunt passed away was a regular day. We woke up got cleaned up and had breakfast. We made sure her oxygen tank was working and my cousin wen off to work. My aunt and I loved to watch Bad girls club together. We put the show on and had a great time watching and talking and laughing together. She was quitter than usual that day and her energy was a bit low, but that was to be expected since she had good and bad days. We had some family members and church members come over, ...

Basketball quickly becomes a getaway for Wes and his friends. What activities do you enjoy doing while trying to cope with difficult situations?

Basketball quickly becomes a getaway for Wes and his friends. What activities do you enjoy doing while trying to cope with difficult situations? Whenever I have to cope with a difficult situation, my very first step is always a nap. I think a nap is the best first step to coping with a difficult situation, because it is a recharge. I think of how anyone in IT when they’re trying to troubleshoot your issue always tells you to turn it off and turn it back on. I take that approach. When I’m faced with a tough decision, or have to have a difficult conversation, I take a nap to help myself reenergize, and also buy some time. Sleep has become a great coping method because it allows me to rest and not approach any situation while tired. My mom has always said it is a blessing to be able to sleep when you have problems or are stressed out, because most people have insomnia when they’re stressed out. My body automatically gets ready for sleep when I’m stressed. The next thing I usually ...

Is Higher Education Worth the price

Image
Is Higher Education Worth the price When thinking about the cost of higher education and whether it is worth it, I decided to look at it from the view of what I’m getting in the long run. The cost of college is high, however, when I think of what I have gained and still stand to gain by continuing my education, I find that the cost is worth it for me personally. When applying for a job, most of the worthwhile positions have a degree as the minimum requirement to get the interview.  College is worth it if you take full advantage of the opportunity it can provide. Because I went to a 2-year school, I learned how to network, work in a group, and use the resources available to my advantage. I was able to get an internship that I otherwise would not have access to. That internship then opened the door for the career I currently have. Had I not attended that community college, I would not be where I am today. This module was eye opening for me in several aspects. What had t...

Is Fast Food the New Tobacco?

Image
Is Fast Food the New Tobacco? Tobacco has for decades been linked to cancer, asthma, and many other illnesses. The CDC.gov website has history on when the government finally put labels on cigarettes. According to the site, On January 11, 1964, Luther L. Terry, M.D., Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service, released the first report of the Surgeon General’s Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health. In 1966 the Federal government mandated that cigarette packs have a warning on them from the surgeon general. The question of whether Fast food is the new tobacco is a loaded one. Some like myself would say yes. I say yes because it seems the government is trying to regulate fast food as they do tobacco and yet are not doing a great job. Slapping a label on things has never entirely deterred a person from using a product. Radley Balko’s article ‘What You Eat is Your Business’ published in 2004 talked about the government attempting to make mandates to control obesity. He said, “Con...

Is Pop Culture good for you?

Image
Is Pop Culture Good for You? Pop culture is a term that refers to products or activities that are currently being directed at and consumed by the mass population. In doing this assignment, I really thought hard about whether Pop culture is good. Pop culture encompasses so many different things that this question is difficult to answer. Pop culture includes the internet/social media, music, movies, various art forms, food, clothing and even hairstyles and makeup. Not everyone consumes what is considered popular the same way. I believe the consumption depends on what is important to the individual. For example, almost everyone I know has a tick-tock account and creates content or has participated in at least one of the video trends on there. I downloaded the app once, only because my niece created a video and wanted me to watch it and like it for her to get views. For about a week after that I would watch different fun videos there. The moment I needed to manage the space on my iPho...
